Mails Woodwork designs modern furniture that echoes a
historical craft tradition. I build intensively by
hand, with tools familiar to the workbenches of the
18th century, to create work that is sensitively
shaped and robust - that will function and invite for
generations.
Located in the Piedmont of North Carolina, I obtain timber from locally felled trees and area sawyers. My furniture, then, displays the black walnut, oak, ash, hickory and poplar abundant in the surrounding forests and neighborhoods.
Handsaws reduce the wood to width and length. Planes thickness and surface. Axes and chisels shape. These ways of making, though largely forgotten, offer a visceral connection to wood that is, to me, irresistible.
I invite you to explore my current work, or inquire about new designs to meet your particular needs. To learn more about how I work, visit my blog, or have a look inside my workshop.
